 迪兹（加里·库珀 Gary Cooper 饰）是一位小有成就的商人，早已经衣食无忧的他希望能够从繁忙的事务中脱身，将时间更多的花费在自己的兴趣爱好之上。一笔价值两千万的巨额遗产从天而降落到了迪兹的头上，报社问询派来了记者芭比（琪恩·亚瑟 Jean Arthur 饰），希望她能够从迪兹的身上挖掘出一些吸引眼球的新闻。刚开始，芭比十分看不惯迪兹的处世为人，但随着时间的推移，她渐渐被后者的善良和正直所吸引，两人之间产生了浪漫的爱情。迪兹决定将得到的遗产用于帮助深陷贫困的人，这一举动遭到了律师约翰（Douglass Dumbrille 饰）的质疑，他坚定的认为迪兹的脑袋可能出了什么问题，甚至将他告到了法庭。
