 望海庄是洱海边的一个小渔村。近几年富裕起来，家家都要建新房添置家具。于是，村长从剑川请来一个年轻的木工师傅赵木桃。谁知木桃来后，在望海庄掀起一场风波。赵木桃是个温和、乐观风趣、手艺高超的小伙子。他一夜之间赶制成一把龙头三弦琴，赢得了全庄人的求爱。燕子姑娘热情奔放、能歌善舞，木桃来庄后，她就暗暗地爱上了他。可是木桃却装不知道，因为，他早已爱上貌似观音的姑娘杨海翠，并特意雕刻了一尊他家乡剑川甘露观音像，准备送给自己心爱的人。然而海翠早有了对象马成兴。马成兴因生意亏了本，人也不知去向。海翠为此常常流泪思念。海翠妈一心想找能挣钱的女婿，误以为木桃是万元户，便千方百计地要促成这门婚事。做事没有主见的海翠也以为木桃很有钱，于是在众乡亲的祝贺下与木桃举行了订婚礼。燕子将痛苦深埋在心里。当海翠母女得知木桃不是万元户时大失所望，感情产生了裂痕。一天，失踪的马成兴突然弄回一船木料来到海翠家。他得知海翠已订亲，失望地想离去。海翠妈苦苦相求并中伤木桃，马成兴信以为真。燕子听到海翠要与马成兴复好，深为木桃的处境感到痛心，压入心底的爱火又燃起。她听从父亲的话，诚心诚意去劝说海翠，心地纯正的马成兴了解了这门婚事的真相后，留下一封信走了。他说：他需要的不是用钱买来的心。海翠捧着信泣不成声。伤心的木桃不愿在望海庄呆下去，但燕子舍己为人的优秀品德终于赢得了木桃的爱心。木桃和燕子终于成为一对恋人。
